Module 3 – Medieval Tourism and Medieval Warfare: Possible Uses of the Outremer Map

When the Outremer Map was drawn in the 13th century, the space it depicts was of acute religious and military interest to the medieval West. While the reasons for these two interests certainly overlap (the Holy Land was considered sacred, and medieval Christians wanted both to visit and to possess sacred places), these interests certainly require different kinds of information.

This module will ask you to consider what might have been the purpose of the map when it was drawn and how it might have been used. Because the purpose of the map is still a matter of dispute, your thoughts on this matter may help us to understand the map more completely.
